Brooklyn, New York. When 51 year old school teacher Carol Brown sustained injury to her right hand from a negligently maintained heavy metal door in a New York City owned building she had little idea the injury would cause her excruciating pain for the rest of her life.

Five years later a New York City jury awarded Ms. Brown $ 200,000 for past pain and suffering and $ 1,000,000 for future pain and suffering.

Brown’s doctors testified that Brown’s hand injury had caused her reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) a from of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

COMPLEX REGIONAL PAIN SYNDROME (CRPS)

CRPS comes in two forms: 1) complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (RSD), that suffered by Brown, and 2) complex regional pain syndrom type 2, also known as “causalgia.”

SYMPTOMS

Both forms are described by the Merck Manual of Medical Information as “persistent burning pain accompanied by certain abnormalities that occur in the same area as the pain.”

The abnormalities that accompany the burning pain may include:

1) increased sensitivity
2) swelling
3) changes in skin color
4) abnormally cold skin temperature
5) abnormally hot skin temperature
6) excessive sweating
7) a lack of sweating in a particular area
8) muscle spasm
9) limited movement (decreased range of motion)

EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS CRITICAL

According to Stephen J. Parillo, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Jefferson Medical College, “CRPS…is treatable if recognized early; however, the syndrome may become disabling if unrecognized.”

According to Parillo, “A single, reliable, sensitive, and specific diagnostic test for RSDS is not available.”

Nonetheless doctors use a variety of tools to complete the diagnosis including: bone scans, MRI, and nerve blocks.

CAUSATION

According to the Merck Manual of Medical Information complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (RSDS) results from “injury to tissues other than nerve tissue” and complex regional pain syndrome Type 2 results from “injury to nerve tissue.”

RJ Schwartzman in Current Opinions of Neurology and Neurosurgery states that “CRPS usually occurs secondary to fractures, sprains and trivial soft tissue injury.”

The incidence after fractures and contusions ranges from 10-30%.

TREATMENT

While there is no known cure, CRPS is managed using a multi-disciplinary, non surgical approach with the proper combination of medications, nerve blocks, massage and physical and occupational therapy.

CASE VALUE

According to VerdictSearch.com juries have been very sympathetic to plaintiffs with CRPS.

“A simple search of the VerdictSearch database would provide 49 such instances of that injury from cases disposed in 2008 alone. Do the math, and you’ll find that cases involving that injury produce an average jury verdict of $ 8,174,911. Of course, you’d have to view the cases in your jurisdiction and weed out those that include other more significant injuries, but the point should be clear…”

DEFENSE VERDICT

Victory is never certain in any trial, even those involving a serious injury like CRPS. In October, 2007 a New York County, New York jury refused to award damages to a plaintiff who claimed her hand surgeon’s surgical and post operative care were improper and therefore caused the patient to suffer from complex regional pain syndrome type 1.

SUMMARY

Emergency room personnel and other doctors need to know the symptoms of this disease so they can refer out for prompt and appropriate treatment. If you have been injured in an accident, especially one involving fracture or severe bruising, be on the lookout for CRPS.

If you feel a persistent burning pain and one or more of the symptoms listed above, report it to your doctor immediately. Make sure he is familiar with the literature for this disease.

Effective Ways of Getting Rid Of Pain Due To CRPS Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (also known as CRPS Syndrome) is a disease caused by the malfunctioning of the central and peripheral nervous system of the body. It is characterized by constant pain, change in the color of skin and swelling of the affected areas. The International Association for Study of Pain has characterized the disease into two major categories depending upon the root cause of the disease. Type I CRPS is caused by damage in the tissue cells whereas Type II CRPS is most commonly associated with a nerve injury. The disease cannot be cured and the almost all the treatment techniques for CRPS include relieving the patient from the immense and sudden pain. As discussed it causes severe pain in the affected body part, and the pain can transverse to other body parts also.
The causes for CRPS are still unknown; however a majority of doctors suggest that pain receptors belonging to Catecholamines are responsible for sustaining the pain. Catecholamines are a particular class of nerve messengers and are released from the sympathetic nerves. CRPS II is said to be caused from an uncertain triggering of the immune system of the body which causes swelling of the affected area. It is not easy to diagnose CRPS as some people have shown remarkable improvement without any treatment, after being diagnosed with CRPS. So a specialized doctor’s consultation is advised before starting treatment for any forms of this syndrome.
A number of treatment techniques are available for it and almost all of them focus on relaxing the patient by alleviating pain. Medications such as antiseizure drugs, antidepressants and corticosteroids are available in the market. However these medicines must be avoided as they are associated with a number of side effects. In addition to the above mentioned medication methods, anesthetic injections such as Iidocaine can also be preferred. These anesthetic injections are often regarded to remove nerve blockages thereby regulating the flow of blood to the affected area. Stimulating the cord with neurotransmitters has also been proved effective against the pain caused by CRPS. The anode used in this treatment method can be beneficial as it directly affects the central nervous system of the body. Sympathectomy is the most recent method for the treatment, which include killing of the nerve cells that are responsible for this syndrome. It has attracted many controversies and is a debatable topic.
National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke are constantly researching for finding cure for the treatment of CRPS. They have supported some theories; however no concrete results have been achieved till date.

I thought I would create a picture with PicsArt of a picture that I took back in April. The picture of a "grabbing flame" turned out to be perfect for Color The World Orange Day, which is today.
I have had CRPS/RSD for 25 years now. Its in both hands, arms, shoulders and upper back.
Sometimes its a lot to deal with. And most of the time CRPS/RSD patients try to hide how much this disease affects our life. Its hard to describe something that even some doctors cant describe.
I gave a little more information about CRPS/RSD in the description area of another photo that I posted on 7-4-14 in the album "Photos With A Story" called "C.R.(a)P.S".
The month of November is National CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) Awareness Month and November 2, 2015 is "Color The World Orange Day". Orange was chosen as the color to represent the "fire-like burning pain" that CRPS causes. CRPS is also known as RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). It is a chronic pain disease that is characterized by a fire-like burning pain that usually affects a limb but can spread throughout the body.
NORD (National Organization for Rare Diseases) has officially designated CRPS as a RARE disease. There are fewer than 200,000 patients with CRPS/RSD in the United States.
The McGill Pain Index, a chart that is used by hospitals and doctors worldwide to measure chronic pain, has listed CRPS/RSD as the most painful form of chronic pain that exists. That means that it is above the amputation of a digit, unprepared childbirth, chronic back pain, non-terminal cancer and a fracture (listed in decreasing order).
There are still doctors and nurses that do not know what CRPS/RSD is. Thats where National CRPS Awareness Month comes in. To get the word out. So here it is……WORD!!

Scrambler Therapy is also one of the best therapies in the world.

The third stage finds the patient with contraction of the soft tissues so movement of the affected limb is restricted. Muscle wasting is clear, and therefore the whole of the affected limb is subject to burning pain that’s sensitive to the touch. These changes are irreversible and may be quite disabling.

Early diagnosing will facilitate to slow the progression of CRPS, however it may be tough to diagnose. Patients themselves, in stage 1, might not acknowledge the seriousness of their symptoms. As a rare condition, CRPS won’t be thought-about as a diagnosing till different causes of the pain are dominated out, and a few physicians could merely not be as accustomed to it as a prospect.
